You’ve created a website and published it on the web, but now you’re probably wondering how people — the right people, those who’ll be interested in who you are and what you do — will find you. You’ve heard about search engine optimization, or SEO, but don’t have the first clue how it works. Another way to find places you can build links is by using a link intersection tool. These find sites that link to “competitor a” and “competitor b” but not to you. Theoretically, if they link to both of your competitors, they should be willing to link to you. Moz, Ahrefs, LunaMetrics and others have link intersection tools that work quite well. Google uses unique variables in the local ranking algorithm. However, Google's local algorithm and the organic algorithm are interconnected. Websites with good traditional SEO elements also get better rankings in Google's local results. The type of content you use on a page also matters for indexing. For example, images are indexed differently from text. Find out which search terms are already bringing people to your site

Google has several bots: Googlebot (desktop), Googlebot (mobile), Googlebot Video, Googlebot Images, Googlebot News. For most websites, the Googlebots for desktop and mobile are the most important bots. The best keywords are ones that don’t have much competition. Try long-tail keywords — these are three- to six-word keywords that are extremely specific and tend to have less competition for them. Your homepage is the most important and likely your strongest webpage. The link power (AKA link juice) is distributed from the homepage to all other subpages. Ideally, you should distribute the link juice evenly to all other subpages through internal links and easy navigation menus. Be careful not to include links within content that lead directly to the desktop or mobile version of a page. Even if the user will be switched to the correct URL based on their device, Google sees these types of links as a bad user experience. At one time, directories like DMOZ were a good place to add listings and get backlinks. However, these large web directories aren’t really relevant anymore.
